On-Campus Degrees: Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is awarded to a student who has completed the full range of post-graduate studies within their chosen major field. PhD students complete extensive graduate courses in their major, pass a written and oral examination, and complete and defend a thesis. The PhD is generally required for university-level teaching and research professions. The degree was first offered in the United States at Yale University in 1861.
The PhD typically takes from four to eight years, following a bachelor's degree program, to complete. Students who enter a PhD program with a completed master's degree, however, can shorten the term by two years. U.S. Census data reports PhD holders earn an average $25,000 more per year than their counterparts who hold only a bachelor's degree.
